Nebraska Trip, August 2000

Getting There

I went to Nebraska to visit my Grandma and other relatives receintly. Getting there was quite an experience.

I left my appartment on August 4th. I got to the airport to find out that my United flight to Dever was cancled. I was suppose to meet my sister and mother in Dever for the last leg to Omaha. The United servier representive at the gate my flight was originally at refused to give me ANY information on the flight. She said we had to go back to the front desk to get information. I went back to the front desk, but I wasn't the only ones having problems. I finally got up to the desk about 2:20pm, and my flight was originally suppose to leave at 2:15pm. It turns out that I had been rebooked on American West via Phoenix. They also gave me a lunch voucher so that I could have lunch.

The American West flight didn't leave until a bit before six, so I had a bit of time to kill. While I was waiting, my mother called to find out where I was. She was expecting me to say somewhere in the Denver airport, but I said I was still in San Jose. This really surprised her (because I was suppose to be in Dever by this time), and I told her about the new flight arrangements.

The American West flights went perfectly fine. Nothing exciting. I did get into Omaha at about 1:30pm which was about 20 minutes late. When I stepped off the plan, I didn't see anybody waiting for me, but that was because they had cleared the area. Then when I left the gate area, no one was there to meet me. Puzzled, I headed down to the Baggage Claim area and still didn't see any of my relatives. Finally, just as I'm calling my mother, I get the notification that I have voice mail waiting (Sprint PCS likes to delay notifing you that you have voice mail waiting for you). So, I call and find out that my sister's and mother's flight had been cancled because of the pilots (there's more to it than just this, but I don't want to get into it).

An Aunt and her daughter were going to be renting a car so that all of us could drive back together, but it turns out that they thought I was stuck in Denver with my mother and sister because when they asked the United Representative where the three Gurney's were, my Aunt was handed a piece of paper with my mother's and sister's flight times. She did not spend the time to find out that I had been moved to another airline and did not know to wait for me.

Because of United's incompentance, I was unable to join them for the trip back, and had to get a hotel room for the night. I was then able to meet my sister and mother at the airport the next day and my cousin Bill was able to pick us up and drive us to Wayne.

The Fun

It was good to see my relatives and my aging Grandmother. I had brought along my digital camera (with a new 64meg CompactFlash card) to take photos. Since I had the new larger card, I was taking photos in larger file size. I haven't written a cgi that allows you to control this, so many of the files are close to a half meg in size. Once I complete the program, you will be able to get the images in a smaller size. UPDATE: I have written a cgi now, I will be posting a write up about it in the near future.

The first set contains photos from before the Wayne County Fair. I went to the Wayne County Fair so that I could watch the Demolition Derby. I decided to take a few pictures of the demolition derby. I got a sequence of pictures of a couple of the cars going at it.

The second set is the remaining photos that I took. Most of the photos are of relatives and so aren't that exciting.

My Mother receintly had her film developed and put onto a Kodak PhotoCD. I copied them and put the photos up.
